Welcome to Tongur Music!

Established in 2013 by Babur Tongur and Ilkim Tongur, Tongur Music is a Calgary-based music studio offering instruction in violin, piano, music theory, and composition. Since our founding, we’ve worked with over 200 students—some of whom have successfully completed Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) exams, pursued music as a university minor, or simply grown their love and skill for music. We're proud of each student's progress and would be happy to welcome you to the Tongur Music family!

PRACTICE & STUDIO ETIQUETTE

Regular practice is essential to progress. Daily practice expectations range from:
  • 10 minutes (beginners)
  • Up to 2+ hours (advanced students)
Parents are encouraged to:
  • Support and supervise home practice
  • Use practice charts when requested
Respectful, kind behavior is expected at all times.

MISSED OR RESCHEDULED LESSONS

Notice Required:
  • 48+ hours’ notice: full credit or rescheduling
  • 24–48 hours’ notice: we will try to reschedule
  • Less than 24 hours’ notice or no-show: no reschedule or credit
Credit System:
  • You can collect up to 4 credits and use them toward a future month’s payment
  • Partial credit redemptions (e.g., for 2 missed lessons) will not result in reduced monthly payments
  • Credits are only redeemable in full months. We do not offer partial month payments unless you’ve accumulated 4 credits.

Recitals

We host at least two recitals each year:
  • Winter Recital – typically in December
  • Spring Recital – typically in  June
Additional recitals may be added based on demand.
We also offer home recitals for advanced students preparing for RCM exams.

Participation Guidelines:
  • Neat, respectful recital attire is expected
  • Students must attend rehearsals, where they will learn stage etiquette (walking on stage, bowing, etc.)
  • Students who participate must stay for both halves of the recital
  • Recitals are separately ticketed events

Photos and Videos

We may take photos/videos during lessons or recitals.
Please indicate your consent (or non-consent) for use of these images on our website, social media, or printed materials in your enrollment form.

RCM Exams

If you are interested in preparing for Royal Conservatory of Music exams, please notify us early. This allows us to:
  • Build your repertoire
  • Register you in a timely manner
You will need to:
  • Create an RCM account
  • Maintain a student ID
  • Pay applicable exam fees

Teacher Availability

As active performers and composers, your teachers may occasionally need to reschedule for professional commitments. In such cases:
  • You will be notified at least one week in advance
  • We will find a suitable alternative time
If your regular teacher is unavailable, another qualified studio teacher may substitute—though this is rare.

Studio Holidays & Breaks

Holidays observed:
  • New Year’s Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Canada Day
  • Christmas Day
Breaks:
  • Winter Break 2 Weeks - aligned with school holidays
  • Spring Break 1 week - aligned with most school spring breaks
  • Summer Break: 2 weeks -TBA
We encourage summer lessons, as long breaks often lead to a loss of progress and the development of poor habits. Summer is a great time to build skills without academic-year distractions.

Timeliness

Punctuality is appreciated:
  • If late: We'll do our best to provide a full lesson, unless another student is scheduled immediately after
  • If early: You're welcome to come in quietly and observe
  • If parents are late for pick-up: Children will be supervised in the studio (reading, coloring, doing homework, petting cats, etc.)
Please notify us via call or text if delayed due to traffic or emergency.

Taking a Break
  • If you'd like to pause lessons, please provide one month’s notice
  • If a teacher chooses to end lessons, it may take effect immediately

Lesson Rates

We offer weekly lessons at the following flat monthly rates:
  • 30-minute lessons – $180/month
  • 45-minute lessons – $270/month
  • 60-minute lessons – $360/month
  • 90-minute lessons – $460/month
Rates are based on a 4-lesson month and remain the same even in months with 5 lessons. Adjustments will be made for months with scheduled breaks (e.g., December or summer).

Payment Methods

Payments can be made via:
  • Cash
  • Cheque (payable to Tongur Music)
  • Interac e-Transfer to: [email protected]
Please make payments at the first or last lesson of the month, depending on your preference (let us know in your enrollment form).

Yearly Administrative Fee

$30 annual fee per child is charged in September to cover administrative costs. Please add this to your September payment.

Thank You!

We’re excited to share the joy of music with you and your family.
Welcome to the Tongur Music community!
