Tongur Music Studio Policy
2026-2027
Welcome to Tongur Music!
Established in 2013 by Babur Tongur and Ilkim Tongur, Tongur Music is a Calgary-based music studio offering instruction in violin, piano, music theory, and composition. Since our founding, we have worked with over 250 students—some of whom have successfully completed Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) examinations, pursued music as a university minor, or simply developed a lifelong love of music. We are proud of each student's progress and are delighted to welcome you to the Tongur Music family.
Practice and Studio Etiquette
Regular practice is essential for musical progress. Daily practice expectations range from:
• 10-15 minutes for beginners
• Up to 2 or more hours for advanced students
Parents are encouraged to:
• Support and supervise home practice
• Use practice charts when requested
Students and families are expected to treat teachers, fellow students, and studio property with kindness and respect at all times.
Missed or Rescheduled Lessons
Notice Required• 48 or more hours' notice: Full credit or rescheduling available
• 24–48 hours' notice: Credit available or we will attempt to reschedule, though this cannot be guaranteed
• Less than 24 hours' notice or no-show: No credit or rescheduling
Credit System• Families may accumulate up to four lesson credits
• Credits may be applied toward a future month's tuition
• Partial credit redemptions will not result in reduced monthly payments
• Credits are redeemable only as full-month credits
Tuition Structure
Tongur Music operates on a 10-month academic year running from September through June.
Enrollment reserves a weekly lesson time for the entire academic year. Tuition is based on annual enrollment rather than the exact number of lessons in a given month. As a result, monthly tuition remains consistent throughout the school year, regardless of months that contain more or fewer lesson weeks. Even if you take longer breaks for personal vacation time, you will still pay the allocated fee in order to keep your time slot.
If you enroll mid-way through the term you will be responsible for the following months’ fees.
Students are automatically enrolled from September through June unless other arrangements have been made with the studio.
Specific tuition rates and lesson-length options are provided separately in current registration materials.
See webpage for more information.
Summer Lessons (July & August)
Summer lessons are optional but strongly encouraged. Students who continue through the summer typically maintain their progress and return to the school year with stronger skills and better practice habits.
Families may choose from:
• 4-Lesson Package
• 6-Lesson Package
• 8-Lesson Package
Summer lessons may be scheduled weekly, bi-weekly, or in a customized arrangement based on teacher and family availability.
Students participating in summer lessons receive priority scheduling consideration for the following academic year.
Summer registration information will be distributed each spring.
Recitals
Tongur Music hosts at least two recitals each year:
• Winter Recital – typically in December
• Spring Recital – typically in June
Additional recitals may be offered based on student interest and demand.
We also offer home recitals for advanced students preparing for RCM examinations.
Participation Guidelines• Neat, respectful recital attire is expected
• Students must attend rehearsals when required
• Students will learn stage etiquette, including entering the stage, acknowledging the audience, and exiting appropriately
• Students participating in a recital are expected to remain for both halves of the event
• Recitals are separately ticketed events
Photos and Videos
Photos and videos may be taken during lessons, recitals, and studio events.
Please indicate your consent or non-consent regarding the use of images and recordings on our website, social media platforms, or promotional materials on your enrollment form.
Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) Examinations
Students pursuing examinations are responsible for:
• Creating and maintaining an RCM account
• Maintaining an active student ID number
• Registering for examinations under their teacher's name
• Paying all applicable examination fees
Students interested in preparing for Royal Conservatory of Music examinations should notify their teacher as early as possible. Advance planning allows sufficient time for repertoire selection and exam preparation.
As part of the studio's commitment to thorough exam preparation, mock examinations and additional preparation sessions required for RCM examinations are included in regular tuition whenever possible. These mock exams provide students with valuable experience performing under exam conditions and help identify areas requiring further refinement before the official examination.
Students requiring an accompanist for examinations, festivals, or performances are responsible for all accompanist fees. Accompanist services, rehearsals with the accompanist, and performance fees are separate from regular lesson tuition. Accompanists may be arranged by the studio or selected by the student and family.
Additional coaching sessions beyond regular lesson time, if required, may be arranged and may incur additional fees.
Teacher Availability
As active performers, composers, and educators, studio teachers may occasionally need to reschedule lessons due to professional commitments.
When this occurs:
• Families will generally receive at least one week's notice
• An alternative lesson time will be arranged
On rare occasions, another qualified studio teacher may substitute for the regular instructor.
Studio Holidays & Breaks
Holidays Observed• New Year's Day
• Thanksgiving Day
• Victoria Day (May Long Weekend)
• Canada Day
• Christmas Day
Scheduled Breaks• Winter Break – 2 weeks (aligned with school holidays)
• Spring Break – 1 week (aligned with most school spring breaks)
• Summer Break – 2 weeks (dates announced annually)
Tongur Music follows an annual studio calendar that includes designated holidays and breaks. These dates are built into the yearly tuition structure and do not require make-up lessons.
Additional studio closures, if any, will be communicated well in advance.
Timeliness
Punctuality is appreciated and helps lessons run smoothly.
• Students arriving late may receive a shortened lesson if another student is scheduled immediately afterward
• Students arriving early are welcome to enter quietly and observe if appropriate
• Children whose parents are delayed will remain supervised in the studio, reading, coloring, completing homework, petting cats, or engaging in other quiet activities
Please notify us by phone or text if you expect to be delayed due to traffic or an emergency.
In-Home Lessons
Tongur Music offers in-home lessons in select areas.
For in-home instruction, the teacher will travel to the student's residence at the scheduled lesson time. Families are responsible for providing a safe, quiet, and distraction-free learning environment and access to a properly maintained instrument.
A mileage fee may be added to regular lesson tuition depending on the distance between the student's residence and the teacher's starting location. Any applicable mileage charges will be discussed and agreed upon before lessons begin.
Availability for in-home lessons is subject to scheduling and geographic considerations.
In cases of severe weather, unsafe road conditions, or other circumstances that make travel impractical, lessons may be moved online or rescheduled at the teacher's discretion.
Taking a Break
• Families wishing to pause or discontinue lessons are asked to provide one month's notice
• If a teacher chooses to discontinue lessons, it may take effect immediately
Payment Methods
Payments may be made by:
• Cash
• Cheque (payable to Tongur Music)
• Interac e-Transfer
Payment timing and instructions are provided upon registration.
Administrative Fee
An annual administrative fee is charged each September to help cover registration and administrative costs.
Current administrative fees are listed in the studio registration materials.
Thank You!
We are excited to share the joy of music with you and your family.
